Teaching Your Child To Love Reading

One of the most difficult things as a parent is instilling good reading and writing habits into children, especially in this age of technology. However, children that love reading are usually associated with having a higher intelligence and better critical thinking skills. It is important to help foster a love of reading in your child.

The best thing to do is start developing these habits early in your child’s development. Numerous studies have shown that children who are exposed to reading from an early age do better in all academic aspects, have better basic speech skills, more logical thinking skills, and enhanced concentration and discipline.

Here are a few more tips on cultivating these all-important reading habits in your kids:

-       Be a good reading role model
Your child won’t be much of a reader if you aren’t! Make sure your child sees you reading often. It doesn’t matter if it is books, newspapers, or magazines. Children often copy what their parents do. Also, teach a respect for books from an early age. Show your children how to properly take care of books, and make sure you follow the same rules.
-       Create reading habits
Set aside some time each day as “reading time.” Allowing your child some space every day to read can make them avid readers for their entire lives. Create a routine where your child reads at the same time, in the same place every day. Make sure you make reading time a priority, and schedule around it.
-       Don’t be pushy!
As much as you want your child to read, you should not force them. This could create the opposite effect. Instead, try to catch their interest by presenting them with a variety of books that they might like. If they don’t want to continue reading a book, allow them the freedom to start another one. Reading time should be fun, not forced. Have patience!
-       Go to the library often
Going to the library is an adventure for kids, and it will ensure that children always have a few books that they would like to read. At the library they will be exposed to other children to read and be given the chance to look at a variety of books that will interest them. A lot of libraries also have programs and events that encourage children to read.
-       Share what you’ve read
Encourage your child to tell you about the books they have read and the stories they heard. This will help you keep track of your child’s reading comprehension and interest levels. You should also share the things that you have read and stories that you may have heard that will interest your child.

Teaching good reading habits can be difficult, and it definitely does not happen in a day. However, by sticking with the guidelines you have set up, you can spark a love of reading in your child.

Brooklyn Summer Program & Summer Institute for Kids

Summer can be a hard time for parents. Most parents in Brooklyn are on the lookout right now for a good Brooklyn summer program. Children are out of school, and you have to keep them busy and mentally stimulated, which is why most parents opt for summer programs. There are a lot of choices around, however. A lot of people send their kids to Brooklyn sports camps for the summer, others to theater or arts camps. Schedules differ as well. Some places offer an all day camp, others are only a few hours.

Brainy Academy, in Sheepshead Bay, has a summer education program for your kids. Children here attend classes in our enrichment center every day, from 9:30-12:30 p.m. They take math and reading classes on a daily basis, because we believe that it is important for children not to forget what they learned in school. Brainy Academy also offers additional enrichment with Science and Russian classes.

Brainy Academy uses the Singapore math and logic method for their curriculum, which develops children cognitively. We believe the best approach to teaching children is to give them the tools they need to solve academic problems, and let them figure it out based on logic and reasoning. Memorization is a method which just doesn't work. When you let a child do it on their own, they remember it forever. This approach makes Brainy Academy one of the best Brooklyn summer programs around.

The program starts on July 1 and ends on August 31, so we will keep your kids learning throughout the entire summer. Brooklyn summer programs can be expensive, but Brainy Academy has very reasonable rates. Plus, our teachers are very experienced and professional.

New Brooklyn Tutoring and Montessori

Brainy Academy is located in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, dedicated to bringing a love of learning to children.

"We believe that the best way to prepare your child for the world of tomorrow is by teaching them to love learning today.  Our child centered, progressive program of education features classes for every age group and interest.  In our state of the art location at 1733 Sheepshead Bay Road children learn in bright classrooms equipped with the latest in Montessori, Lego, Knex and computer technology.   Montessori and Lego classes are 2 hours each.  Tutoring is based on your child’s unique needs and times vary according to your requirements.  Lego Birthdays are held every Saturday and Sunday by special arrangement.

In Brainy Builders with Lego ®Education children learn math, physics, pattern recognition, engineering and construction.  Research indicates that carefully planned Lego ® based  programs boost test scores, increase a child’s problem solving capabilities and increase levels of self esteem.  Specific studies include:

-          Study of Educational Impact of the Lego Dacta materials – Infoscuela, October 1998 – January  1999
-          Educational Impact of Lego Dacta Materials, Sheffield Hallam University, UK, Spring 2001
-          Implications of Brain Research for teaching Young Adolescents, Lucinda M. Wilson & Hadley Wilson Horch, September 2002, Middle School Journal.

For all those parents who understand the extensive benefits of the Montessori environment and would like their children to learn in a Montessori program we created Brainy Montessori, an alternative to a traditional preschool program. Children can attend Brainy Montessori classes in our beautiful Sheepshead Bay location in Brooklyn once or twice a week. In Brainy Montessori children learn math and language skills, including early literacy.

Emphasis is placed on logic in preparation for the OLSAT and Gifted and Talented testing. Children are taught by an educator with over a dozen years of experience teaching in a full time Montessori school. A special program for English as a second language is available for English learners.

Studies show that children introduced to the Montessori method aquire both language and math skills faster than their peers who are not taught according to the method. They also show that children in Montessori environments have better social skills and higher self esteem.
